The Giddy Mystery Cruise – Day One: Partying with Dennis Rodman
OK – so we made the decision to leave a day earlier from New York, Friday instead of Saturday. There was snow and ice in the forecast, so we thought it best to get out early rather than getting delayed due to the weather. Good thing we did – the flight was light, although a little late. We got to Fort Lauderdale and checked into a very nice Embassy Suites Hotel, a little after 11pm. Starving and definitely too far removed from an adult beverage we dropped the bags in the room and set out searching through the hotel for something to eat and drink. Too late for the restaurant, maybe we can get some nuts with our beer at the bar. But it was a slow night, and the bar was closed. Bonejob. Now what?Fortunately, the east coast of Florida has a little bit more happening than the west coast, where we’re used to visiting. We walked out of the hotel and right across the street was a hopping Irish Pub called Waxy O’Connor’s. Pints await! We say to hell with the traffic and race across a four lane highway in search of some Guinness and perhaps those little white potatoes!Well the kitchen at Waxy’s was closed, so it was just a couple of pints and we found a table in the corner. Nice place – real Irish décor and low ceilings, it was like drinking with the Hobbits in The Shire.
We’re pounding some beers when into the bar strides a very tall black Hobbit, Dennis Rodman. Couldn’t miss him, blond hair, large pointed nose complete with piercings. Everyone is hanging out taking photos, drinking beer, exchanging dresses – it was nice. Chrissy was depressed that he never made a pass at her. He did seem to be looking at me with a strange twinkle in his eye though. He finished off the last of his beers and took off for the next bar. We went outside to stand around a group of people all much younger than us to finish off our pints, then headed back to the hotel for some rest.
