SHUT UP
Sometimes things worry me, sometimes things piss me off. If you know me – you know then that the statements this week from two of our nation’s most popular blowhards, Pat Robinson and Rush Limbaugh pissed me off. Perhaps you were troubled too. I’m actually more worried though, worried over the fact that there’s still so many misled sheep out there still who actually give a shit what these two idiots have to say.
This week – the two central voices of hate spewed forth their utter contempt and disrespect for human life in their statements regarding the earthquake that struck Haiti on Tuesday. Look, I am a true believer in freedom of speech and exercise that right liberally here on Bonehead. It’s not so much as what these clowns spew out of their pieholes that gets me, it’s simply the knowledge that their venomous words are taken as gospel by their mentally challenged followers.
Lunatic televangelist Pat Robertson called Haiti “cursed” because of their countries distant past actions while adding that they had “made a pact with the devil” stating:
“…ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after the other. That island of Hispaniola is one island. It is cut down the middle on the one side is Haiti the other is the Dominican Republic. Dominican Republic is prosperous, healthy, full of resorts, etc. Haiti is in desperate poverty.”
The comments come as many organizations are in the midst of attempting to raise money from both religious and non-religious organizations, so food and supplies can be sent to the grief stricken country. Efforts Robertson is apparently attempting to slow for his own personal beliefs.
Robertson’s spokesman then tried to justify his comment saying they were made in relations to a Voodoo ritual carried out during a slave rebellion against the French Colonists in 1791.
So apparently under that logic, because the Haitian people didn’t want to be held into slavery by the French and they practiced their religious beliefs 219 years ago, they are now being punished. Who do you think has the shrunken head now?
This is a man that people still send money to regularly to support his cult, er, church. Do you see why I’m worried.
Conservative Radio Talk Show Host Rush Limbaugh proved he learned nothing from his recent chest pains and non heart attack, when his skewed view led to his racist comments about Haiti and African Americans on Wednesday. As people by the thousands turned up dead in Haiti, Rush Limbaugh returned to his racist “us versus them” “white versus black” white supremacist stance when he said this about President Obama’s call to action to help Haiti:
“…use this to burnish their, shall we say, credibility with the black community, in both the light-skinned and dark-skinned black community in this country. It’s made to order for them.”
But he didn’t stop there. Working to discourage aid to Haiti, saying…
“We’ve already donated to Haiti. It’s called the U.S. income tax.”
Robertson has since worked to back away from his statements, claiming compassion for Haiti. Pat Robinson has a long and storied history of sticking his foot in his mouth and then feigning forgiveness, a favorite trait of someone who’s full of shit. Rush Limbaugh has not backed away from his statements. Probably due in part to the fact that he feels as the overindulged representative for the thoughts of the far right wing teabaggers he needs to exploit the freedom of speech thing no matter how insensitive and inflammatory his vile statements may be.
The US has aided the dictators and governments of Haiti for many years – starting during the cold war when the country’s close proximity to Cuba was seen as a strategic military benefit. Problem is, for most of those years, the Haitian government was highly corrupt and the money never got to the people for which it was intended. Yes, that then is a waste of your tax payer dollars and mine.
The Haitian government has long been ineffective in coordinating any sort of system to improve the country. Now that they’ve been hit with this disaster, the people are in need of our help again.
But at the heart of it, this time it is a human issue – not governmental, political or military. The government of Haiti is in worse shape than it’s ever been, and now it’s completely incapable of coordinating assistance for those many injured and dying in the streets, that’s why compassionate assistance is now required, and granted, we want it monitored closely so it gets to the people who need it now.
However, for these two mindless fucktards to come out and do anything that would lead anyone to deny aid to fellow human beings in a true time of desperate need simply exposes their feeling that they and their beliefs are all that matters and the rest of humankind is simply insignificant.
God, religion and country my ass. Think people, think.
